Develop a Research Proposal - Methodology - Data Analysis, data analysis dissertation proposal.3/29/2017 1. Relevance . Do not blindly follow the data you have collected; make sure your original research objectives inform which data does and does not make it into your analysis. All data presented should be relevant and appropriate to your aims. Irrelevant data will indicate a lack of focus and incoherence of thought. In other words, it is important that you show the same level of scrutiny when it comes to the data you include as you did in the literature review. By telling the reader the academic reasoning behind your data selection and analysis, you show that you are able to think critically and get to the core of an issue. This lies at the very heart of higher academia. 8. Discussion. In discussing your data, you will need to demonstrate a capacity to identify trends, patterns and themes within the data. Consider various theoretical interpretations and balance the pros and cons of these different perspectives. Discuss anomalies as well consistencies, assessing the significance and impact of each. If you are using interviews, make sure to include representative quotes to in your discussion. 6. Presentational devices. It can be difficult to represent large volumes of data in intelligible ways. In order to address this problem, consider all possible means of presenting what you have collected. Charts, graphs my future essay introduction, diagrams, quotes and formulae all provide unique advantages in certain situations. Tables are another excellent way of presenting data, whether qualitative or quantitative, in a succinct manner. The key thing to keep in mind is that you should always keep your reader in mind when you present your data – not yourself. While a particular layout may be clear to you why should i not do my homework, ask yourself whether it will be equally clear to someone who is less familiar with your research. Quite often the answer will be “no,” at least for your first draft, and you may need to rethink your presentation. Methodology chapter of your dissertation should include discussions about the methods of data analysis. You have to explain in a brief manner how you are going to analyze the primary data you will collect employing the methods explained in this chapter. Chapter 2: Review of the Literature Chapter 3: Methodology (Qualitative) Chapter 3: Methodology (Quantitative) No procedure is perfectly reliable, but if a data collection procedure is unreliable then it is also invalid.В The other problem is that even if it is reliable, then that does not mean it is necessarily valid. Given the prevalence of the death penalty in the modern world, it is fair to assume that there are perhaps justifications for it, though there are plenty of people who categorically oppose it. Without going into the details of any given judicial system accounting case studies examples, there are number of reasons to support both sides of the argument. The Death Penalty: Con It is arguable that countries still using the death penalty do so purely in response to criminality and try to deter future criminals with it. Ironically, many of the countries that have the death penalty suffer from higher crime rates. The death penalty does not cause the problem but it is merely a response to it. And while the death penalty is usually implemented by autocracy or religious doctrine, it is almost never used in response to actual modern societal values. The question is whether or not execution of an innocent person is strong enough to abolish the death penalty. Remember, the death penalty saves lives. Repeat murders are eliminated and foreseeable murders are deterred. You must consider the victim as well as the defendant. In my opinion, I am in favor of the death penalty, because we can save innocent lives. Life to me is scared as Professor Haag stated. My innocent nephew, Sean Burgado, who was brutally murdered by a shot gun to the chest, did not have a choice to make a last statement or make a will before he died. The people on death row can watch T.V. and enjoy their lives for another 20 years before they are executed. They can prepare their death by making a will and a last statement. Sean’s murder is still unsolved, and the killer is enjoying his life somewhere. The murderer(s) will probably murder another person some day. of potential victims to murder (p. 129) The states that have the death penalty should be free of murder, but those states have the most murders, and the states that abolished the death penalty has less. Conviction of the innocent does occur and death makes a miscarriage of justice irrevocable. Two states Maine and Rhode Island abolished the death penalty because of public shame and remorse after they discovered they executed some innocent men. the possible death of innocent lives that might be saved What is Capital punishment? Capital punishment is the death penalty. It is used today and was used in ancient times to punish a variety of offenses. Even the bible advocates death for murder and other crimes like kidnapping and witchcraft. An Eye for an Eye not to mention wars and revolutions, cause death of The execution of the innocent believed guilty is a It is noted that we need extreme penalty as a deterrent to crime. This could be a strong argument if it could be proved that the death penalty discourages murderers and kidnappers. There is strong evidence that the death penalty does not discourage crime at all (McClellan, G. 1961). Some criminologist claim they have statistically proven that when an execution is publicized, more murders occur in the day and weeks that follow. A good example is in the Linberg kidnapping. A number of states adopted the death penalty for crime like this, but figures showed kidnapping increased. Publicity may encourage crime instead of preventing it (McClellan, G. 1961). We should weigh the death of the convicted murders Crime growth has been going up in the past because of too much leniency going hand in hand with the increased rate of people being victimized. There are many loop holes devised for offenders essay or personal statement college, and because of that crime rate has increased drastically. Between l960 to 1968 crime rate increased 11 times. More and more people are being murdered, raped, assaulted, kidnapped, and robbed, etc. (Isenberg, I. 1997). punishment, and yet, the victims never have a chance to do that? Are crime victims in the United States today the forgotten people of our time? Do they receive full measure of justice (as cited in Isenberg, 1977, p. 129)? Could the same effect be achieved by putting the criminal in prison for life? “Life in prison” means in six months the parole board can release the man to 12 years in some states. “But even if it were real life imprisonment law copyright essay, it’s deterrent effect will never be as great as that of the death penalty. The death penalty is the only actually irrevocable penalty. Because of that, it is the one that people fear the most (Isenberg, I. 1977). these 10 states had abolished the death penalty. Death Penalty Fails to Rehabilitate J. Edgar Hoover, late director of Federal Bureau of Investigations, asks the suffering by works or order primarily to forestall for hire, where the possible penalty of death may well enter by it, the activity is warranted. Most human activities like The 10 states, which had the most murderers from eight to than two a year per 100,000 population -were New Hampshire Wesley Lowe states, “As for the penal system, accidentally executing an innocent person already written essays, I must point out that in this imperfect world, citizens are required to take certain risks in exchange for safety.” He says we risk dying in an accident when we drive a car, and it is acceptable. Therefore, risking that someone might be wrongfully executed is worth saving thousand’s of innocent people who may be the next victim of murder (Internet). In a foot note Bedau (1982) cites, “Actually being dead is no different from not being born, a (non) experience we all had before being born. But death is not realized. The process of dying which is a different matter is usually confused with it. In turn, dying is feared because death is expected, even though death is feared because it is confused with dying (p. 338)”. death has little or no deterrent effect. But for many others, Some people argue that the capital punishment tends to brutalize and disregards society. Do you agree? Some people say the that penalty is legalized murder because it is like “an eye for an eye”. The difference between punishment and the crime is that one is legalized and the other is not! People are more brutalized by what they see on T.V. daily. People are not brutalized by punishments they are brutalized by our failure to serious punish help with your homework, the brutal acts. executions were public and brutal. Some criminals were even crushed to death slowly under heavy weight. Crime was more common at that time than it is now. Evidence shows execution does not act as a deterrent to capital punishment. Hugo Bedau (1982) claims: the disadvantages, human activities including the penal detected. But such miscarriage of justice do not death penalty has never served to reduce the crime rate (p. 40). empirical evidence supporting or refuting this view. Opponents claim lots of innocent man are wrongly executed. There has never been any proof of an innocent man being executed. A study by Bedau-Radlet claimed there were 22 cases where the defendant have been wrongly executed. However, this study is very controversial. Studies like Markman and Cassell find that the methodology was flawed in l2 cases. There was no substantial evidence of guilt, and no evidence of innocence. Moreover, our judicial system takes extra precautions to be sure the innocent and their rights are protected. Most likely an innocent person would not be executed (Internet). Deterrent in 27 States Millions are being killed and will be killed because our justice system is not working. Millions have already been killed and will be killed every year. According to Time Magazine , there are 2,000,000 people beaten in the United States. Some are knifed essay about economics, shot, or assaulted (Internet). In the article of the ACLU Evolution Watch, the American Bar Association said the quality of the legal representation is substantial. Ninety-nine percent of criminal defendants end up penniless by the time their case is up for appeal. They claim they are treated unfairly. Most murderers who do not have any money, receive the death penalty. Those who live in counties pro-death penalty are more likely to receive the death penalty. (Internet). DEATH PENALTY ARGUMENTS: All religions believe having life is sacred. If we deprive someone else life, he only suffers minor inconvenience; hence, we cheapen human life—this is where we are at today. Does the death penalty give increased protection against being murdered? This argument for continuation of the death penalty is most likely a deterrent, but it has failed as a deterrent. There is no clear evidence because empirical studies done in the 50’s by Professor Thorsten Sellin cv cover letter examples uk, (sociologist) did not give support to deterrence (McClellan, G. 1961). Capital punishment, which some also call the death penalty, has been around in society for hundreds of years. Ever since it began, there have been discussions as to whether it is morally right, and as to whether it actually deters criminals. Some believe that the prospect of being put to death often stops criminals from committing violent acts. Others believe exactly the opposite, stating that those that commit violent crimes are driven to do so for various reasons, and whether they have the chance of being put to death or not will not stop them from doing what they feel they must do. the death penalty has disproportionately been applied in cases in which the defendant is nonwhite or the victim is white. Mainly, Opponents of the death penalty argue that (Policy, 2003): Crime, including violent crime, has been with society virtually since the beginning, and it will remain with society until it ends. Nothing will stop some people from committing violent acts, and the death penalty does not appear to be the answer. Sometimes, innocent lives are lost to this process good film dissertation ideas, and many times the families of the victims do not experience the kind of closure that one would hope for simply because the offender has been executed. Since it would appear that even law enforcement does not see the death penalty as an answer to the problems of crime in society, one wonders why it is allowed to continue. Both sides of the argument will be addressed here, so that conclusions can be drawn from the information presented that will hopefully shed some light on the debate and determine which side is correct. There is, however, seemingly much more information available that is against the death penalty than for it. It is also possible that a determination will not be able to be made due to the fact that there are so many issues and beliefs that surround each side, and statistics can be made to show many things, depending on who is utilizing them and how the numbers are manipulated. It is for this reason that statistics will not play a large role in the scope of this paper, as numbers often vary. It is possible, however, that the death penalty would be a deterrent if it were used more swiftly and more often. Many people who are sentenced to death spend years in prison appealing their conviction and appealing their sentence, and this is a large waste of taxpayer money, as well as a huge burden on the court system. Those that are guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt often wait a long time for their sentence to be carried out. Even when DNA evidence shows that they were the guilty party, the execution is still not swiftly carried out, and this allows many criminals to find some way to avoid it. Another concern over the death penalty and violent crime is the issue of the mentally handicapped (Banner, 2003). They, along with juveniles, also commit violent crimes on occasion. These mentally handicapped individuals, not to be confused with mentally disturbed or insane individuals, often have low IQs and do not realize what they have done. The death penalty in their cases is not any deterrent. They do not even realize what they have done. One mentally handicapped man actually asked the jailers to save his dessert for him so that he could eat it after his execution. It was clear that he did not understand what the execution was about, no more than he understood the crime that he had committed. Executing individuals like this does nothing for society. Many people find it cruel, and even if it is not, it is certainly senseless. There are no important lessons about not committing crimes that are learned by executing someone who is mentally handicapped (Reforms, 2002). There are also those that will maintain the opinion that killing is wrong, no matter who does it. Every individual is certainly entitled to their opinion, and it would appear that those who feel the death penalty is wrong are winning their battle, at least in some states, because executions do not take place very often. Even when they do occur, it is usually after a lengthy appeals process lasting many years and costing much money. To summarize, the main point of the argument for the death penalty is that crime will go down because of the fear of punishment. This is the belief of those that advocate the death penalty for all violent crimes, and all of the information to the contrary does not appear to change this opinion. Life in prison doesn’t ever seem to last either. Murderers end up getting out because of law changes, parole board changes, and because people forget the past. Get involved in supporting capital punishment by contacting My first reason for supporting capital punishment is that it is less expensive than life without parole. Abolitionists claim that it’s more expensive, but, the annual cost of incarceration is $40,000 to $50,000 a year for each prisoner or more pay someone write a paper, and life without parole prisoners spend on average 30 or 40 years in prison. The up front costs of the death penalty are a lot higher than equivalent life without parole cases, but JFA: Justice For All, a criminal justice reform organization, says that life without parole costs over time are from $1.2 to $3.6 million more expensive than death penalty cases. TIME Magazine found that, nationwide, the average cell cost is $24,000 a year, and the maximum security cell costs $75,000 a year (as of 1995). Cost comparisons are only valid if you compare the costs of death penalty to life without parole cases. People claim it’s more expensive because they improperly compare the cost of all life without parole cases to death penalty cases, when only the death penalty equivalent life without parole cases are relevant. People are comparing death penalty cases to life without parole cases that aren’t about murder.
I think that it shouldn’t be so expensive to execute a murderer. If we only allowed appeals that are relevant in proving someone’s innocence and eliminated the others that are pretty much just delaying tactics, we’d save taxpayers millions of dollars.
Many people believe that costs to appeal a death penalty case are high. It’s over estimated that death penalty cases will cost twenty times more, on average, or $1.5 million. This exaggerated estimate says that the death penalty will have twenty times more investigation costs, defense and prosecution cost, including court time, guilt/innocence stage, sentencing stage and appellate review time and cost than death penalty equivalent life without parole cases. Even though abolitionists have greatly exaggerated the cost of death penalty cases, death penalty cases still prove to be a lot less expensive over time than death penalty equivalent life without parole cases. Death penalty costs are mainly appeals costs, and life without parole prisoners get the same appeals and should be considered to bear the same costs.
I had to write this for my English class. I got a 98% on it :) Melissa Northrup disappeared on March 1, 1992, a little more than two months later, from the Waco convenience store where she worked. McDuff’s Thunderbird was found broken down a block from the store, and a fisherman found her body floating in a gravel pit in Dallas County fifty seven days later. McDuff was the target of a nationwide manhunt. Days after Melissa Northrup’s funeral, Kenneth McDuff was on America’s Most Wanted. He was arrested May 4th in Kansas City, Imagine you’re sitting in the courtroom. You are watching her killer, you’re trying to figure out, why, why my baby? Why did you pick my family to ruin? You watch him day after day. His eyes are cold, steely blue and lifeless. What is going on behind them? What is he thinking? How could a human being do something like this to another human being? You keep thinking about life in prison vs. the death penalty. You keep thinking about your daughter and how she didn’t get to choose. She didn’t get a chance to do anything she planned for her future. You think about how you may feel as you watch him being executed. You wonder about the families of the other victims. You wonder if he had an accomplice who will continue to kill after he’s locked up or dead. Every once in a while he turns and looks at you. While the medical examiner is giving his testimony and describing what he found, the killer turns and looks at you. He smiles. He’s proud of what he’s done. He’s thinking, ‘look at me, look what I did. You won’t ever forget me.’ He’s right. You will never forget him. But you may get peace knowing that he’s gone. Knowing that another parent will not have to go through what you are going through because of him. Knowing that another young girl will not know unspeakable horror at his hands. Knowing that he can’t tell people the horrible things he did to your baby, or write a book about it or gain the fame that he so desperately craves or have your baby’s horrible demise turn into a made-for-tv movie. His story, his actions, his sickness can die with him. And that makes you grateful. Imagine you’re at work. You know your daughter is getting off the bus just about this time. The thought of something bad happening to her never even crosses your mind--this is the same routine every day. Habert, H. (1996). Capital punishment: The Anti-Death Penalty Movement in America. Death penalty is a great burden to taxpayers financially because the actual cost of carrying out capital punishment is approximated to be 2-5 times higher than leaving the offender in prison for as many years as possible. The process of reaching the final ruling as to whether to hang the criminal is too long because it entails numerous appeals, detailed procedures as well as legal wrangling which drags the entire process as the accused can be tried for a period longer than 20 years. All this detailed process requires substantial funding to facilitate various court officials ranging from attorney general, judges, court clerks and other vital facilities required in court. Web. 30 March 2013. <http://deathpenaltycurriculum.org/node/6?> “…No system of justice can produce results which are 100% certain all the time. Mistakes will be made in any system which relies upon human testimony for proof. We should be vigilant to uncover and avoid such mistakes. Our system of justice rightfully demands a higher standard for death penalty cases. However, the risk of making a mistake with the extraordinary due process applied in death penalty cases is very small, and there is no credible evidence to show that any innocent persons have been executed at least since the death penalty was reactivated in 1976…The inevitability of a mistake should not serve as grounds to eliminate the death penalty any more than the risk of having a fatal wreck should make automobiles illegal…” (ProCon.org) It is true that there is disproportionality when it comes to the races and classes that most frequently receive the death penalty. It has been proven that minorities and those with lower income levels are overrepresented on death row. This is not due to discrimination; this is due to the higher rate at which these groups commit crime (ProCon.org). It has been argued that poverty breeds criminality; if this is true then it makes sense that those at a lower income level would more frequently be sentenced to execution than those at higher income levels (ProCon.org). It has also been proven that minorities are disproportionately poor, and therefore they would also be more likely to receive the death penalty. Ernest van den Haag said it best: Stewart points out that death penalty cases are held to a much higher standard. Due process in these cases takes much longer so that the court can be absolutely sure that the person is guilty before sentencing him to execution. This helps to eliminate any errors that could lead to executing the wrong person. He also points out that although there is a small possibility for mistakes to be made, this does not mean capital punishment should be abolished. If everything that had the potential for harmful mistakes were outlawed, society would be extremely crippled. “Punishments are imposed on persons, not on…economic groups. Guilt is personal. The only relevant question is: does the person to be executed deserve the punishment? Whether or not others deserved the same punishment, whatever the economic or racial group designer baby essay, have avoided execution is irrelevant.” (ProCon.org) The death penalty is an issue that has the United States quite divided. While there are many supporters of it, there is also a large amount of opposition. Currently, there are thirty-three states in which the death penalty is legal and seventeen states that have abolished it (Death Penalty Information Center). I believe the death penalty should be legal throughout the nation. There are many reasons as to why I believe the death penalty should be legalized in all states, including deterrence, retribution, and morality; and because opposing arguments do not hold up how to check for plagiarism, I will refute the ideas that the death penalty is unconstitutional, irrevocable mistakes are made, and that there is a disproportionality of race and income level. The death penalty also carries out retribution justly. “Deserved punishment protects society morally by restoring this just order, making the wrongdoer pay a price equivalent to the harm he has done.” (Budziszewski). When someone commits a crime it disturbs the order of society; these crimes take away lives, peace, and liberties from society. Giving the death penalty as a punishment simply restores order to society and adequately punishes the criminal for his wrongdoing. Retribution also serves justice for murder victims and their families. Some may see this as revenge, but this retribution is not motivated by malice, rather it is motivated by the need for justice and the principle of lex talionis (“an eye for an eye”) (Green). This lack of malice is proven in the simple definition of retribution: “retribution is a state sponsored, rational response to criminality that is justified given that the state is the victim when a crime occurs” (“Justifications for Capital Punishment). The death penalty puts the scales of justice back in balance after they were unfairly tipped towards the criminal. The use of capital punishment greatly deters citizens from committing crimes such as murder. Many people’s greatest fear is death; therefore if they know that death is a possible consequence for their actions, they are less likely to perform such actions. Ernest van den Haag, a professor at Fordham University, wrote about the issue of deterrence: The fact that Hamlet is his father's son is very important, he was there behind his father always watching and observing how a king did and should behave, he saw his father's bravery and his mistakes and Hamlet could use all these experiences to make himself a better king even better than his father. He is of a bloodline of kings, a tradition that is to be kept and Hamlet would have been next in line. The job of taking the throne was in his blood when he assumed the responsibility, ready or not he would have known what to do. "There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." (William Shakespeare, "Hamlet", Act 2 scene 2) In comparison to Hamlet, Odysseus is clearly a hero, especially when he faces moral dilemmas and chooses not to fall prey to his temptations. He makes decisions that would characterize him as a hero when he chooses hardship and death with his family. "My lady goddess, here is no cause for anger. My quiet Penelope-how well I know- Would seem a shade before your majesty, Death and old age being unknown to you, While she must die. Yet, it is true, each day I long for home, long for the sight of home. If any god has marked me out again For shipwreck, my tough heart can undergo it. What hardship have I not long since endured At sea term papers buy, in battle! Let the trial come." The question that presents itself is, is Odysseus a good leader or a good king in Odysseus case they work separately. Odysseus is a ruler of his lands but he is never there to rule his lands or his people. He instead embarked on quests to gain glory and honor, these were self-fulfilling ambitions. A kings stead is in his people, a king must be self-less and but his peoples best interest before his own if he wished to be a good king. He was not out fighting for his people, his land or his family but he was seeking glory, a goal that solely benefitted him. Odysseus was not present, not meaning that he did not care, or at times he wanted to return more than anything but it was simple, he was not present to rule, not making him an ideal king. As Odysseus's rule as a leader of his crew of men, he had their utmost respect and they trusted him and served him above all to the death. Odysseus put his men before himself in certain situations but at other times he used his men as mere pawns to reach his goal. For instance when Odysseus returned home and found the suitors battling for his wife's heart, instead of taking action and taking back his home and family he played with them and toyed with them as if he played a game chess. Hamlet loves his country and in return his country loves him, he would without a doubt have the faith and respect of his country. Respect, a very important aspect to a relationship, every relationship that is to work must have respect. The love shown to him by his country may very well have kept Hamlet alive throughout much of the play. In the play before his father's death everyone in Denmark wanted to be with or more like Hamlet, he was a national icon. After the death of Hamlet's father the nation wept for him and showed him pity, for they loved their prince. In the prince was the faith of the people. Hamlet portrayed loyalty to his country his father and his mother. He even showed love and loyalty to his mother after he found out the role she took part in aiding Claudius to take the life of her first husband, the king and take the throne and her bed. She knowingly lay in bed with the man that killed her husband the king and Hamlet still loved and forgave her. He became angry with her at times but his loyalty was not shaken. He showed an immense amount of loyalty to one person unwaveringly throughout the play, Horatio. Horatio was Hamlet's confidant and best friend throughout much of the play Horatio was the only person that Hamlet could truly trust. Horatio was the only man that did not play pawn to the king in an attempt to change and alter the feelings of Hamlet in the matters of his father's death and his new uncle-father-in-law. Hamlet's ultimate allegiance lied with his father, his father asked Hamlet to avenge his death by any means necessary and if it meant to slander his name or the name of his family so be, it or if it ultimately meant death then he shied away from that neither. "Neither a borrower nor a lender be; For loan oft loses both itself and friend, And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry. This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man." With themes of tragedy, love, revenge, family and many more, the play causes a reader to ask questions that can be only answered by Shakespeare. One of these questions is whether Hamlet is truly sane or not throughout the play. Hamlets acting as a different personality over a lengthy period of time eventually leads to his unstable state of mind. We feel that they are living beings with problems that are perennially human. Why does Hamlet delay. Not only did it make a suspenseful and dramatic play that captures the attention of an audience but it also gives away to what kind of character William Shakespeare wants to create for his young tragic hero, Prince Hamlet. This Hamlet is a man who suffers from his own words that “the native hue of resolution / Is sicklied o’er with the pale cast of thought,” (III, I, 85-86). This technique helps to reveal Hamlet’s true character, expressing emotions that the audience cannot see through his interactions with other characters. Through Hamlet’s soliloquies, one may notice that his reluctance to take actions that involve death can be attributed to his fear of the unknown and his uncertainty in regards to afterlife. Even though Hamlet seems ardent in his intentions of avenging his father’s death during his encounter with the Ghost, by the second act, Hamlet begins to doubt that the ghost was actually his father. Gunnar Bokland in “Hamlet” describes Gertrude’s moral descent during the course of Shakespeare’s Hamlet: With Queen Gertrude and finally also Laertes deeply involved in a situation of increasing ugliness, it becomes clear that, although Claudius and those who associate with him are not the incarnations of evil that Hamlet sees in them, they are corrupt enough from any balanced point of view, a condition that is also intimated by the “heavy-headed revel” that distinguishes life at the Danish court. By condemning Ophelia to a nunnery in the first act of Scene III, Hamlet is taking from her the opportunity to marry anyone but Christ and the ability to have earthly children. However, had she been removed to a nunnery, Ophelia might have finally found herself free. In a nunnery she would have had no one to serve but Christ and her church; the desires of men cannot be forced upon those whom they cannot reach. But inversely, her insidious feminine wiles would have difficultly wielding her “wantonness” as a weapon against men. [tags: GCSE Coursework Shakespeare Hamlet] 564 words In Act IV, Hamlet encounters alienation and nothingness when he meets a Norwegian captain under the command of Fortinbras. When Hamlet asks the captain about the cause and purpose of the conflict, he is shocked to learn that the countries' armies will go to war over "a little patch of land / That hath in it no profit but the name" (IV.iv.98-99). After Hamlet recovers from the shock of the captain's honesty, he is dumbstruck by the thought that Fortinbras would sacrifice the lives of thousands of men for an admittedly inferior "patch of land." At this point in the play, Hamlet is still struggling with his own inaction, unable to kill Claudius even though he knows of his guilt. Hamlet has a good reason to kill Claudius, yet he fails to do it. How can Fortinbras sacrifice so much for such a futile purpose? In this scene, Hamlet realizes the brutality of humanity and first ponders the idea that no one is safe—another central pillar of existentialism. Prince Hamlet is a university student who enjoys contemplating difficult philosophical questions. When his father, king of Denmark, dies, he returns home to find evidence of foul play in his father’s death. The Ghost of Hamlet (the dead king) tells Prince Hamlet that his uncle Claudius is the murderer. Throughout the rest of the play, Hamlet seeks to prove Claudius’ guilt before he takes action against Claudius. However, Hamlet is pensive ad extremum, at times even brooding; he constantly overuses his intellect while ignoring his emotions and ignoring what "feels right." His extreme logic causes him to delay his revenge against Claudius until the final scene of the play where he kills Claudius and proves that he has progressed into a truly existential character. What is mankind? Who am I? What is the meaning of life? These are multifaceted existential questions that ancient and modern philosophies have yet to adequately answer. Countless philosophers have spent their lifetimes in search of answers to these questions but died before finding a suitable answer. Certainly, the philosophy of existentialism is an interesting phenomenon. The dictionary defines existentialism as a "philosophical movement. centering on analysis of individual existence in an unfathomable universe and the plight of the individual who must assume ultimate responsibility for acts of free will" ("Existentialism"). The character Hamlet from Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet explores these existential questions, seeking truth and understanding as he tries to come to grips with his father's death. In the end, Hamlet proves to be an exceedingly existential character. When Hamlet finally does achieve his father’s vengeance, he was not spurred to it on his own, but by watching his mother and Ophelia die in front of his own eyes. Furthermore, as Hamlet realized that he had only two minutes to survive, he really had nothing to lose; this is when he made his move to stab and poison Claudius. Hamlet’s speech is confusing because it conveys a “happiness that often madness hits on, which/reason and sanity could not so prosperously be delivered of" (II.ii.212-214). In the body of the essay, all the preparation up to this point comes to fruition. The topic you have chosen must now be explained how to improve writing skills in essay, described, or argued. Remember. After working your way through the whole draft, testing your thinking against the evidence, perhaps changing direction or modifying the idea you started with, go back to your beginning and make sure it still provides a clear focus for the essay. Then clarify and sharpen your focus as needed. Clear, direct beginnings rarely present themselves ready-made; they must be written, and rewritten, into the sort of sharp-eyed clarity that engages readers and establishes your authority. The fullness of your idea will not emerge until your conclusion, but your beginning must clearly indicate the direction your idea will take, must set your essay on that road. And whether you focus your essay by posing a question, stating a thesis, or combining these approaches, by the end of your beginning, readers should know what you're writing about, and why —and why they might want to read on. Often, however, you will want to summarize your source more fully so that readers can follow your analysis of it. Focus the Essay. Beyond introducing your topic essay on teamwork experience, your beginning must also let readers know what the central issue is. What question or problem will you be thinking about? You can pose a question that will lead to your idea (in which case, your idea will be the answer to your question), or you can make a thesis statement. Or you can do both: you can ask a question and immediately suggest the answer that your essay will argue. Here's an example from an essay about Memorial Hall. Try to avoid the some of the more hackneyed openers: Another common method of opening a paper is to provide a startling statistic or fact. This approach is most useful in essays that relate to current issues, rather than English or scientific essays. When writing English papers essay communication, introducing your topic includes introducing your author and the aspect of the text that you’ll be analyzing. “Thomas Jefferson’s statement in the Declaration of Independence that “all men are created equal” seems contrary to the way he actually lived his life, bringing into question the difference between the man’s public and private lives…” The previous sample introduction contains a general sentence at the beginning that bring up a very broad topic: love. The first paragraph outlines the origins of Quintana's research into the connection between radiation exposure and disease, and ends with the revelation that her own family had been affected by radiation. The next paragraph discusses her family's health history. Each has its own singular purpose and topic, yet the first paragraph leads to the topic of the second through a common term. accordingly Paragraph transitions can expand the range of discussion as well as narrow it with an example thesis title for electrical engineering student, as Quintana's transition does; this selection from an article by Deborah Cramer on the ecological impact of the fishing industry shows how a single instance of overfishing indicates a world-wide problem. The large yearly catches, peaking at 130 million pounds from the Gulf of Maine in 1942 making a cover letter stand out, wiped out the fishery. It has yet to recover. Example: Since the dawn of man, slavery has been a problem in human history. You will probably refer back to your assignment extensively as you prepare your complete essay, and the prompt itself can also give you some clues about how to approach the introduction. Notice that it starts with a broad statement and then narrows to focus on specific questions from the book. One strategy might be to use a similar model in your own introduction—start off with a big picture sentence or two and then focus in on the details of your argument about Douglass. Of course, a different approach could also be very successful, but looking at the way the professor set up the question can sometimes give you some ideas for how you might answer it. Fearing retribution from their employers, Minny and Aibileen are at first reluctant to share their stories, but they eventually come around to allow Skeeter a glimpse into their world. Dale Robinette/Dreamworks Pictures Adapted and directed by Hollywood hopeful Tate Taylor, a childhood friend of Stockett's, The Help trots stolidly after the book, replicating its basic structure while ironing out the verve with which its nested stories unfold. Taylor has none of Stockett's feel for the seething impulses of character, and he has a clunky way with some serious acting talent. In fairness, Emma Stone, the exuberant young star of Easy A, may not be built for earnest melodrama, but she's unaccountably tamped-down as Skeeter, the spirited young daughter of white privilege who powers this tale of racism and tentative reconciliation. In an effort to launch a career in journalism ("the last stop before marriage!" one of her lunch chums cries merrily) and uncover the secret behind the disappearance of her own beloved nanny (Cicely Tyson), Skeeter embarks on a series of clandestine interviews with Aibileen (Viola Davis), a stoical, middle-aged maid submerging her grief over the death of her own son in her love for the little white girl she's raising in the shadow of an indifferent young mother. Fearing retribution from their employers, Minny and Aibileen are at first reluctant to share their stories, but they eventually come around to allow Skeeter a glimpse into their world. Dale Robinette/Dreamworks Pictureshide caption Big hair, fine period frocks and interior design lend The Help a pleasingly retro look. Yet for someone who grew up in Mississippi, the director has little sense of place, unless you count one decidedly low-rent tornado and a few inside shots of a black church. Unlike Stockett, who might have been better off writing her own screenplay, Taylor has a tin ear for the vernacular speech of his own region. Much of the dialogue seems lifted from Margaret Mitchell, with the result that virtually no one escapes caricature, from Bryce Dallas Howard, anxiously overdoing a vicious housewife who has made it her life's mission to bar servants from their employers' bathrooms, to Sissy Spacek, marooned in an excruciating dotty-old-lady role as her mother good habit and bad habit essay, to Jessica Chastain as a good-hearted white-trash interloper trying to break into a circle as conscious of class as it is bigoted about color. The Help is a window onto the mid-century south, giving the reader vivid impressions of the beautiful landscapes and warm culture. This includes positive qualities such as friendliness and generosity; we see these close social ties in the ways that family members treat one another. Yet it also includes racism, segregation, and misogyny, which are evident in the violent enforcement of the separation between races, and the lack of professional options for white women. The novel also focuses on different types of romantic love. Despite his affection for Skeeter, Stuart cannot get over the betrayal of his fiancée, Patricia van Devender, and his attempts to build a new relationship with Skeeter continuously fail. On the other hand, Celia and Johnny have a deeply loving relationship, triumphing over class differences, infertility, and social disapproval. What does it mean to be a writer? The journey to publish the book is not an easy one. After an initial stroke of luck in catching Elaine Stein 's attention, Skeeter struggles to develop her ideas, conduct interviews, write the book, and find a publisher. Each step is fraught with difficulties; for example, she must complete the book in only a few weeks in order to send it in for the annual editor's meeting. Skeeter spends many long nights typing until her hands are covered with ink and paper cuts, but she ultimately prevails. Even when everything in the world is trying to tell you what to do and what to believe, you need to make your own path. The central protagonists recognize that the current state of race relations is wrong, and work to correct it. Aibileen strives to teach racial equality and acceptance to Mae Mobley. Minny persists in working on the book about the maids despite the danger it puts her in with her own husband and Hilly. Skeeter continues working towards racial justice despite the rift it causes between her and her two best friends. It is important to note that as a Black woman, Aibileen could not tell the stories of other Black women and the book be received as well as The Help has. If a Black author wrote the book, or if the story allowed for Aibileen to be in charge of her own freedom, The Help would be relabeled as “African- American fiction” or a “Black movie,” marginalized by its topic and not half as successful. Having Kathryn Stockett express her interpretation of Black southern dialect to channel these women sells more; it’s more fascinating to that dominant culture to see a privileged (through wealth or class status) white person engage in “Black things,” like seeing Gwenyth Paltrow rap. Allowing for Miss Skeeter Phelan to opt out of whiteness in favor of the truth is more shocking to our culture systems because we know there is no better place than wealth, prestige, and whiteness, and for someone to give all of that up for a few Black maids, must truly be the messiah. Unfortunately though, this construction is self-serving for those who buy that story, including Stockett construction essay, because while Skeeter gets to leave Jackson, move to New York paper writing service, and presumably begin a fabulous life doing my homework, Minny, Aibileen should i buy an essay online, and all the other maids are stuck to face the wrath of her doing. However, the audience is left with closure courtesy of a Mary J. Blige song and Aibileen walking down the street towards her bright future. Very much aligned with the book, The Help attempts to dismantle some of these idealized tropes that run rampant in popular culture by showing what was actually lost and who gained from sustaining the image of Scarlett O’Hara and her Tara. What detracts from that noble goal are covert ways the movie eclipses historical white racism through the absence of white men, the blind innocence of white women, and the religious obligation of Black people to heal white people’s wounds and forgive. There are five white female characters that propel The Help. One is the savior, Skeeter Phelan; another is Hilly Holbrook, the racist “Queen Bee”; Elizabeth Leefolt, Holbrook’s lapdog; Celia Foote, a hapless Marilyn Monroe-type, teetering around in stilettos; and Skeeter’s mother, Charlotte, the quintessential Southern mother. Again, a common characterization in Southern themed movies, The Help uses Hilly Holbrook’s character, played by Bryce Dallas Howard essay topics in high school, as the vehicle through which all racism and intolerance are enacted. The other women, minus Skeeter and Celia, are so overcome by desires for class elevation and acceptance from Hilly that they cannot express their discomfort with her need to terrorize “the help.” As Hilly pushes for white families to build separate bathrooms for their Black maids (because “they carry different diseases” than white people despite those Black people cooking their food, cleaning their houses, and taking care of their babies), her fellow bridge club members and Junior League hopefuls awkwardly avert their eyes or nervously titter alongside her instead of speaking out. Like their husbands, these women are not to be judged as prejudiced, racist, or bigoted against the Black citizens of Jackson because the inequality they profit from and perpetuate is not labeled as such. Instead, they are going along with simply how things are what is a good thesis statement, which we are led to believe is no fault of their own. That is where Skeeter, the young educated liberal looking to change things, or at least question why those things exist, comes in. To be released in theaters on August 10, I attended an early screening of The Help back in June. It took me a while to absorb and digest the movie and decide what items were most important to address. I walked away from this piece many times conflicted, hurt, frustrated, angry, and defeated. The Black maid/slave/servant-white “employer” narrative is so convoluted, rich in history and meaning, that it is impossible for one post to encompass it all. There is the narrative itself, both as book and film; there is the personal narrative of the author, Kathryn Stockett, whose wealthy Jackson, Mississippi family employed their own Black maid growing up; there is the south’s nostalgia for the antebellum past; there’s also Hollywood’s general obsession with whitewashing history. Of course, all of that can be summed up by simply acknowledging that the commercialized mainstream media culture is only able to address the United States’ racist past, racial tension, and racial inequality if it absolves white guilt/complicity, valorizes whiteness through history, mythologizes that history write essay for me best site, or ignores historical accuracy all together. And it seems the only way the mass American audience is interested in seeing films that explicitly involve relationships between Blacks and whites is if it does those aforementioned things. While the delusional marketing powers that be pose this story as a tale of sisterhood (instead of servitude), where “three ordinary women are about to take one extraordinary step compare and contrast essay writing topics,” more realistic people have recognized it as another example of the “white messiah” appointing him/herself as the savior of the poor cover letter examples for internships business, oppressed, uneducated Black people. As Hollywood and other large cultural outputs have made it known they love a good “white salvation through Black (brown, red article, yellow) liberation” narrative, it is not surprising that The Help franchise continues to be successful (still high on the New York Times Best Sellers list); nor is it surprising that it was made into a major motion picture; and even less surprising is the fact that Touchstone Pictures, a Disney entity, is responsible for distribution. Disney, as we all know is the reigning champ of purveying a white, heterosexist ideology where Blacks and other props of “diversity,” including women, are only as useful as their ability to maintain the status quo. Of all this—which influenced the lives and thinking of millions, especially in the South—in The Help. not the hint of a hint. The film’s defenders tout it as heartwarming and uplifting, with a Hollywood-type happy ending that symbolizes the progress made since the 1960s. In truth, there are several moving moments and the performances of all the leads are committed and passionate. Though not articulated, the subtext here has much to do with elation over the ethnicity of the present occupant of the White House. After all, the book was published in 2009 and the film released in 2011. When Minny is booted out of Hilly’s house, she is eventually hired by Celia Foote (Jessica Chastain), the wife of a wealthy businessman, who treats her like a human being. Celia herself is an outcast, whom Hilly views as white trash because of her humble origins and also resents because she secretly carries a torch for Celia’s husband. The Help is not simply a reductive—to say the least—period piece, whose main dynamic is a skirmish between good and evil, with blacks on one side and whites on the other. It rewrites, probably out of light-mindedness and lack of knowledge more than anything else, the history of social struggle in America and postwar history in general. It is not, however, directly for those weaknesses that the film has generated a certain amount of controversy, although one confined to a narrow social segment. The Help. based on the best-selling novel by Kathryn Stockett, is a film about race and class relations in Jackson, Mississippi in the early 1960s. A century after the American Civil War, the work makes clear, African-American women had few options but to labor as exploited domestics for wealthy white families. While socialites entrusted the raising of their children to the maids, the latter were barely able to tend to their own families. Aibileen, who has raised 17 white children, acutely feels her lineage as the daughter of a maid and the granddaughter of a house slave. She suffers chronic indignities while attempting to compensate for the emotional blows delivered to the white offspring by their insensitive and absentee parents. In several interviews, Stockett states that “I grew up in the 1970s, but I don’t think a whole lot had changed from the ’60s.” Perhaps in her constricted world, this is true. It is also true that no section of the working class has been liberated, although a layer of the black middle class has been cultivated and co-opted by the ruling strata. The titanic battles in the 1960s did make a difference. The black population and its white allies took up a courageous fight that inspired and moved the whole population. It had a worldwide impact. If you don't, you might miss useful information whilst doing other research. The television and radio often have programmes on topical issues which could be of use - if you don't already have some ideas for your essay you could miss their usefulness. It is similar to the process when you learn a new word: because you have actually looked it up, it then seems to appear more often. This is because you become more sensitive to it - the same will happen with your essay subject. The transition from one paragraph to another often presents some difficulty - but it is essential to maintain continuity and give verbal signposts to your reader. Some common linking words and phrases which can help you to do this are: The body of the essay will take each of these main points and develop them with examples and illustrations, using clearly defined paragraphs. Looking for the answers to predetermined questions helps to avoid this. At the end of your essay you should give a full list of the material you consulted to complete your essay - a bibliography. If appropriate you should also list the organisations and people you have contacted. This is useful to the reader and to you if you should need to check back on points or take some of your ideas further. You will usually have a book list which will list the major sources of information for your subject. Use the bibliographies in these books to extend your reading. You can refer to your lecture notes, but don't rely solely on these, as they are often a general overview or could contain incorrect information if you have misunderstood something. The most productive sources of information are often subject specific journals writing proposal for essay, the "broadsheet" newspapers (e.g. The Guardian, The Independent, The Observer) and ever increasing on-line resources, such as the Internet. Others give structured details which guide you step by step through what is really required. Utilizing the information set out on the home page, completed the piece on what paper needed dissertation services in uk buy, added my email and pressed continue. After completion they logged me into the system where I had completed the request on the essay required, requesting a two-page essay with a delivery time of seven days. Speaking the truth, I had to try really hard and all the time, starting from the very first day in college. The only thing that pleased me in this whole situation - was an opportunity to join the group of acting skills. The process of making an order is pretty much similar with the services I used before: 1. Choose the type of writing you need 2. Write your email 3. On the next page fill in the details of your order 4. Review offers for your paper 5. Choose the writer and deposit the money for the paper The prices were quite moderate committee member and dissertation, even cheaper than at the services I used before – maybe because the paper wasn’t in a very sophisticated topic. I even tried to play with the order specifications and found out that when you choose the writer level (School, University or Doctor), it directly affects the range of writers and the prices they ask for. My paper was only 2 pages, but I didn’t want to pay extra for the urgency and set a deadline for it in a week. Can you imagine what was my surprise when 3 days later I received in my mailbox a notification to review the paper? At first I thought that this was just an outline – but no, it was a full paper, formatted and cited. Last week I was faced with this problem all stressed up, as had two projects to complete and an essay to write for my business subject. With no time on hands and stressing, what was even worse is that the essay is about becoming a winning leader. A close friend at school advised prime essay, that I should use an online academic paper service to assist me with my work or it would be very late nights for me. I had a task that I did not even have time to start writing. I had to write argumentative essay on the topic: “Economic planning influenced by environmental conservation”. So I registered on this site and start placing my order. The paper was quite good free essays and outlines, but of course having 4 extra days before the deadline and benefitting from the fact that I haven’t released the money to the writer yet, I asked to change some expressions in the text. I found them pretty basic and wanted the writer to substitute them with more rare ones. I understood that the writer didn’t necessary have to do it – the paper was written according to all my demands and there was nothing “essential” to correct. But the writer accepted my whim and did everything as instructed. They did a great job to finish my writing on time. It was not an easy topic, but I still received an original essay. You can always control the progress to ensure that your writing will be delivered punctually. I received 6 bids in 3 minutes after I submitted my requirements. I did have a small talk with them to learn more about their background, understanding, and knowledge. By asking initial questions, I can understand their ways of thinking better, which helps me in deciding the right writer for my writing. Taking a closer look at the writer’s profiles and decided on which one I would be working with. Corresponding with them via the chat application available was easy and in no time everything had been, sorted regarding the paper. The only thing I was concerned, it is a fact - that the site was created in 2015, it is completely new, and I thought that they might have no customer before. Why Do Students Feel As If They Need Them? I recently had the opportunity to speak with a former writer for a prestigious essay writing service and his experience in the industry. The benefits of using custom-writing services are immense for foreign students. In addition, students with part-time jobs do book report analysis, older students who have families and those who are going through tough personal struggles simply need help to go through all challenges they face. The rapid growth of the custom-writing industry is a symptom of the great weaknesses within the educational system what does assignment mean, which put students through a great deal of stress and emotional struggle. So while it is only natural for some people to look for cheaper options and for others to offer low quality work at a lower price, most continue to learn their lesson the hard way: timely + quality + cheap = doesn’t exist in reality, and anything spent on looking for that mirage is a waste of – fill in the blank – time, money accounting and finance dissertation topics, energy, emotions, etc. Nobody is willing to work for free or for next to nothing while putting in a considerable amount of effort, time, concentration and attention to details. If you can’t exactly put yourself in someone else’s shoes because you are not familiar with the work process, think about something you know how to do well. Would you be willing to do that for very cheap texting and driving essay hooks, or would you rather invest this amount of effort or time into something yielding more tangible results? So if you ever tried to create a cheap essay writing service, how would you make it real while ensuring quality and honest work? Different services – online ones and those using some land-based premises – are essential in the modern fast-paced world. Once upon a time, people had to do everything on their own that was necessary to sustain a living. They had to learn many trades and probably more often than not were masters of none, but the introduction of money had changed that, allowing them to specialize in what they could do best while simply paying for something they were not good at. This still remains the essence of different services, and the main reason to consider using them. However, while modern technologies have maximized the availability, the speed, the efficiency and variety of services dead man walking essay, there’s little they could change about the human nature: we are likely to forever doubt if the price of something is fair when we don’t know from personal experience how much work and time goes into it. They are now the first country to leave the Protocol and there is no reason why they can't now be joined by more countries. As the Blog states, this opens up a whole new side to the case involving possible instability and distrust between nations which will need to be overcome should the fight against climate change be successful. Published: 23rd March, 2015 Last Edited: 23rd March, 2015 As Greenblog states my personal goals examples, their withdrawal doesn't change much for the fight against reducing carbon emissions as Canada was never really a part of it seeing as their emissions have increased by 20% rather than decreasing. The blog states that "future UN negotiations will certainly become even more polarized and the mistrust created will surely delay use case study diagram, or in worse case even sabotage short term career goal essay, efforts to secure a global climate deal for 2020 and beyond. But one thing that is painfully clear now is that a legally binding climate deal does not guarantee countries won't ignore or walk away from their commitments." Provide funds in the short and long term to enable developing countries to take greater and more effective action against climate change. According to Environment Minister Peter Kent, Canada will now look forward to a more global deal that will incorporate all nations in the fight against climate change and reducing carbon emissions. The outcome that was reached recognized that there was a need for "deep cuts in global emissions" and that the emissions of developed countries must fall by 10-40% by the year 2020. The agreements were aimed to move the international action on climate change and global warming forward by primarily bringing countries' greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets under the UNFCCC process. They stated that should they have decided to remain in the protocol, it would have cost them $13.6 billion in 'fines' or penalties seeing as they failed to reach their target. The Canadian government stated that this would result in a severe blow to their economy and could result in either a mass loss of jobs or approximately an additional $1600 per family in tax so as to accumulate the money to be used for emissions trading with nations that exceeded their targets in order to offset the amount so that Canada could in theory have reached their target. Instead the government ducked out early to avoid any cost and slammed the protocol by stating that it fails to include the world's two largest greenhouse gas emitters being China and the United States. They said that the protocol only serves to harm hurt Canada's competitiveness and overall it proves ineffective at reducing global emissions. The government set objectives which are outlined in the National Climate Change Response White Paper. These objectives can be briefly understood as being: At the conference in Durban all goals were eventually reached and decided on with the nations agreeing on: Making sure that global progress towards the long term goal is reviewed on a regular basis. As a signatory of the Kyoto Protocol, South Africa contributes its fair share in the fight to lower the global amount of greenhouse gases that are emitted. However they are classified as a developing country and hence they are not subjected to the more demanding commitments placed on developed countries.
