Write a narrative about your experiences with writing. Generally, what have they been like? What was your best writing experience? Was it out of school, or in school? What did you do that was not successful? Writing never came easily to me. This book depicts a kid with autism really well. It displayed some normal behaviors that this kid portrayed with autism, which taught me a lot more about autism. “I rolled back onto the lawn and pressed my forehead to the ground again and made the noise father calls groaning. “(p.8) This taught me that most people with autism can not function normally when a stressor comes a long so they react in ways such as groaning and getting into a ball to calm themselves down. It was August 16, 2014, my first day of my English 28 course. I walked in the door expecting this class to be the most dreadful unappealing course ever. In previous classes I would stare at the clock, watching each second pass by wondering when class was finally going to be over. I walked in and was a little timid because there were so many people in the class. I sat down and immediately all these people started to converse with me. At that moment I felt like maybe this class wont be too bad after all. I was still a little skeptical because each course provides a unique experience with various ways of teaching. The professor is key to your learning experience in class. There are some professors who do not care about their students, and then there are some who strive to see their students succeed. I would always put off taking English because I was afraid of not doing well. But to my surprise I was completely wrong. Experiences as a Writer Many discussions with peers have lead me to believe this quote can sum up most of a graduate student’s writing life. Struggles turn into lessons learned and lessons learned lead to major victories. It is true that the sweetest victories come out of struggles, and victories in writing are no different. Grants and published papers are validation to a scientist that they are on the right track and advancing their careers. The importance of writing in science finally clicked around year 2 of my PhD program. This is typically the time one is expected to find funding for his/her projects, publish papers, and come up with future project ideas. The only way to accomplish this…is…to…WRITE! However, that blissful ignorance could not (and did not) last forever. I was fortunate enough to have mentors who took the time to explain to me how important writing was to my scientific career. If I want to be good at science, I must be good at writing. It took some time to accept this reality. I strongly dislike rewriting. I won’t say “hate,” because hate is a strong, irreversible word foundation of critical thinking, but I strongly dislike rewriting. I want to differentiate between rewriting and editing. Editing asks why is this word, sentence, punctuation mark buy a persuasive essay, etc here? It then asks is there a better symbol or writing tool to better communicate the idea? The answer can be unexpected and shatter the very foundation of the story. I think my weakness in reporting is my experience and control of multimedia options in journalism. I am behind and am hoping to catch up to my field. I am most excited to learn video and graphic design because I think these possess the most versatility and potential in a quickly evolving field. However, I have never shot any video or done any video editing scholarship letters of application examples, so I have a lot of catch up to do. My worst experience has to do with video. In my news reporting class freshmen year, we had to broadcast reporting where we were given a quick story and then had to film our report. I had just come from a job interview and my chosen attire consisted of a stripe and cross pattern, which danced on video. I had skipped important information and my 30 second report turned into barely 20. I am not very photogenic–enough said.
The entire class was also assigned a writing combing sentences assignment. We were given a handout that consisted of twelve sentences that needed to be revised. I found this assignment to be fun. I was interested in seeing how many ways a sentence could be revised. This paper allowed me to show my sentence skills. After rewriting my paper I got a passing grade which helped me to practice my sentence skills for writing. During this term we were given four in class essay tests. One that I was partially satisfied with was my essay titled Individuals. I can say just as in my Narrative Description essay I felt a strong personal connection with this paper. I chose to do this assignment on supporting disadvantaged individuals as I’m considered to be one myself. I felt it would have a stronger connection with supporting details because I’ve actually experienced it. After overlooking my paper I found I had received a passing score, a four. I had the leverage I needed to stick to my point. This paper has a personal touch to its existence and I find it to be one of my favorites I’ve written. My teacher Mrs. Shaw also assigned the students in class some skill labs on the internet. She needed to see where we stood with our computer skills in writing. In my sentence grammar I received a score of 45 which is low. My punctuation and mechanics I received a score of 73 which is better. Then in my usage and style, and basic grammar I received an 80 which I am very satisfied with.
